Multiplayer Overview

Gears of War: E-Day ships October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and Xbox Game Pass with two multiplayer pillars that share movement, weapons, and cover rules but demand different mindsets. Horde Siege is large-scale player-versus-environment combat for up to twelve players split into three squads of four. Versus is tight four-versus-four PvP with fair starts, identical loadouts, and competitive Ranked plus relaxed Social playlists. Whether you are queuing during the Open Beta or planning your first launch-week sessions, this hub-style overview explains how both modes fit together and where to drill deeper on the wiki.

Start with Getting Started if you have not touched E-Day yet, then return here once slide-to-cover and Active Reload feel automatic from the movement guide. Open Beta access splits into two windows: August 6–10, 2026 for pre-orders plus Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers, and August 13–17, 2026 for everyone. Confirm your eligibility on the Open Beta schedule and Open Beta codes pages before August 6.

Horde Siege at a glance

Horde Siege scales classic Horde survival into multi-squad warfare on Kalona battlefields. Twelve players organize as three fireteams of four, each member picking one of four classes with a unique tactical ability:

ClassAbilityRole summary
AssaultSonic DisruptorFront-line damage with cover damage boost
BreacherAdrenaline InjectorClose-range burst and aggressive entry
MarksmanPulse DronePrecision at range and target marking
MedicStim VaporizerSustain, revives, and squad recovery

Playlists ship in three lengths tuned to session time: Blitz (15–20 minutes), Siege (20–40 minutes), and Horde (50–60 minutes across ten waves). Difficulty tiers — Infantry, Commander, and Allfather — scale with your class level, so early runs teach mechanics before higher tiers punish sloppy R.I.G. maintenance.

Objectives revolve around R.I.G. nodes you Secure, Calibrate, Repair, Defend, or hold through Horde phases. Energy fuels abilities and comes from Supply Caches scattered across the map. Secondary Objectives reward squads that split attention wisely, while Invasion Events spawn boss threats like Corpser and Brumak that can wipe an unprepared lane. Successful runs end with Raven extraction; downed players drop COG tags teammates must recover to revive. Class progression reaches 30 levels, and Weapon Parts only bank if you extract — dying before the Raven leaves costs your haul.

The Open Beta exposes Horde on Golden Quarter, a dedicated test map. Full release includes three Horde Siege maps at launch. Read the full Horde Siege guide for R.I.G. callouts, Energy economy, and squad coordination across three four-stacks.

Versus at a glance

Versus strips multiplayer down to readable 4v4 fights. Every player spawns with the same loadout so gunfights are won on movement and teamwork, not pre-round shopping. Launch playlists include Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition, and Crucible, each stressing different map control habits.

Six Versus arenas ship day one: Outpost, Battleship, Park, Precinct, Market, and Skyward. Ranked tracks skill rating while Social offers low-stakes warm-up. New players should run Boot Camp and Combat Training tutorials before jumping into Ranked queues.

Tactical fundamentals — spawn control, micro-destruction denial, and power-weapon timing — live in Versus 4v4 Tactics. Mode-specific win conditions, round flow, and Crucible quirks are covered in the dedicated Versus modes guide. Map callouts and Horde-versus-Versus geography are on Kalona maps.

Shared progression and cosmetics

Multiplayer progression is unified under a Player Level cap of 100 with up to four Re-Ups for a 500-level long-term grind. Medals run Bronze through Diamond to mark milestone achievements. Class XP in Horde Siege and Versus performance both feed the same account progression detailed in the progression system guide.

The Coalition confirmed Season 1: Emergence at launch with five post-launch seasons planned. Nearly all cosmetics are earnable through play — E-Day does not ship a traditional battle pass. Seasonal roadmap timing and update cadence are tracked on Seasons roadmap.
