Campaign Co-op

Gears of War: E-Day retells the opening hours of Emergence Day through Bravo Squad in the city of Kalona. The campaign is built for cooperative play from the ground up: Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, Mags Carter, and Lucas Reyes are all playable from the first chapter, AI fills empty slots when you solo queue, and full parties can run four-player online co-op or two-player split-screen on console. This guide explains how to assign roles, manage never-fight-alone AI, and pair each Gear with weapons and tactics that survive E-Hole ambushes.

If you have not configured controls or practiced Active Reload yet, read Getting Started and Movement & Cover first. Character backgrounds and story context live on the Bravo Squad roster page.

Never-fight-alone solo structure

Solo players are never truly alone. When you start campaign without human partners, AI-controlled Bravo Squad members join with directed combat behavior — taking cover, reviving, and responding to callouts. The system exists so narrative pacing stays intact without forcing mandatory matchmaking.

To get the most from AI allies:

  • Stay near the squad — Wide flanks leave AI pathing behind, slowing revives and objective triggers.
  • Use explicit commands if available — Hold, advance, and focus-fire orders reduce friendly blocking in tight Kalona alleys.
  • Pick a complementary player character — If AI Marcus pushes aggressively, play Mags or Lucas for mid-range stability.

Solo remains viable on standard difficulty, but higher tiers and optional challenges assume human coordination for E-Hole timing and heavy weapon swaps.

Playable Bravo Squad members from chapter one

Unlike games that lock characters behind progress gates, E-Day lets you select among Marcus, Dom, Mags, and Lucas immediately. Each fits a different combat rhythm:

Marcus Fenix — Front-line anchor familiar to series veterans. Best for players who want aggressive cover pushes and Lancer handling. Pair with Active Reload practice from the movement guide.

Dom Santiago — Supportive mid-range fighter suited to players who prioritize revives and squad spacing. Strong pick when you expect frequent downed-state recovery during Locust waves.

Mags Carter — Precision and tactical positioning. Ideal for calling E-Hole locations and picking off Feral Locust variants before they reach the squad.

Lucas Reyes — Newer to the roster but integrated from the opening mission. Flexible secondary role — run Lucas when your party needs a fourth specialty without overlapping Marcus and Dom both rushing.

Rotate characters between chapters to learn animations and voice lines, but commit to one main for difficulty spikes so weapon familiarity carries forward. Weapon rankings by mode are summarized on the tier list.

Four-player online co-op

Online co-op supports up to four human players, one per Bravo Squad slot. Assign responsibilities early:

RoleResponsibilitySuggested focus
PointFirst contact, E-Hole calloutsMarcus or Dom with Lancer
OverwatchLong angles, variant priorityMags with precision weapon
FlexFlanks, heavy weaponsLucas or rotating pick
SupportRevives, Gut Puncher timingDom or dedicated support loadout

Communication beats raw aim in E-Day campaign setpieces. Call emergence before you break cover, announce when micro-destruction removes your wall, and sync Gut Puncher timed detonations with slide entries from the point player. Detailed emergence steps are in How to Close E-Holes.

Match difficulty to your party size: four humans can raise challenge for better rewards; two-player groups should avoid overstretching on mechanics that assume constant revives.

Two-player split-screen

Console split-screen co-op lets two players share one display with divided HUD space. Practical tips:

  • Sit closer than usual — Micro-destruction details and reticle-near Active Reload bars shrink on halved screens.
  • Split responsibilities vertically — One player handles E-Hole callouts and navigation; the other focuses on crowd control.
  • Avoid duplicate close-range weapons — One Incinerator Imulsion shotgun is enough; the second player should hold mid-range.

Split-screen partners miss some peripheral UI cues; verbal callouts matter more than in online play.

Loadouts, weapons, and setpiece prep

Campaign introduces franchise-favorite tools in prototype form, including an early Chainsaw Lancer origin story beat. Chainsaw revs lock you into melee range — only commit when Dom or AI allies have suppressed the target cluster.

The Gut Puncher grenade launcher enables timed detonation behind cover; designate one co-op player as the detonation caller to avoid double-spending rounds on the same E-Hole. Incinerator Imulsion shines when Feral variants stack in chokepoints.

Before major story missions, restock ammo at checkpoints and confirm everyone finished the movement warm-up from Movement & Cover. Open Beta weekends (August 6–10, 2026) are ideal for co-op rehearsal even if story progress resets.

Transitioning to Horde Siege and Versus

Campaign teaches E-Holes, Feral variants, and weapon fundamentals that carry into Horde Siege multi-squad PvE and Versus 4v4. After completing early Kalona chapters, sample Horde Siege if your group prefers objective PvE, or Versus 4v4 Tactics for competitive execution of the same movement kit.

Track launch timing and early-access tiers on the release date page. Redeem any cooperative cosmetic unlocks listed under Open Beta codes and verify party invites via the beta checklist before sessions.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers for Emergence Day prep and launch week.

Can I play the entire E-Day campaign solo?

Yes. Never-fight-alone AI squadmates fill empty Bravo Squad slots when you play solo, so you can finish the campaign without online matchmaking. Human co-op is optional but recommended on higher difficulties.

Which Bravo Squad members are playable at launch?

Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, Mags Carter, and Lucas Reyes are all playable from the first chapter. You can switch among them as your party composition allows.

How many players does online co-op support?

Up to four players can join online co-op, with one human per Bravo Squad character. Console players can also use two-player split-screen for local co-op.

What is the best co-op role for closing E-Holes?

Designate one player as callout and closure lead with explosive or heavy support such as the Gut Puncher, while others suppress Feral Locust variants during the emergence animation. See the dedicated E-Holes guide for step-by-step timing.

Does co-op progress carry into Horde Siege or Versus?

Campaign co-op teaches shared mechanics, but Horde Siege and Versus use separate progression and class systems. Movement, Active Reload, and weapon handling still transfer directly between modes.
